According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) Earthquake Department data, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was reported in Çanakkale's Ayvacık district at around 22.15. While the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 13.03 kilometers in the earth's crust, caused short-term panic in Ayvacık and surrounding districts, there was no loss of life or property according to initial findings.
Seismologist Prof. made evaluations on his social media account immediately after the earthquake. Dr. Naci Görür drew attention to the technical details of the earthquake and what it meant for the region. Stating that the earthquake occurred on the Küçükkuyu Fault, Görür stated that it was a shallow and small earthquake. However, the famous geologist emphasized that this activity is part of a larger picture and pointed to the southern branch of the North Anatolian Fault Line: "This zone shows that the Marmara Region is receding. We expect the big earthquake in the northern branch as soon as possible."
This statement by Görür once again brought to the fore the warnings that preparations against the major earthquake expected in the Marmara Region should be accelerated without delay.
On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, on the other hand, said that the statements about a magnitude 8 earthquake in Istanbul do not reflect the truth and said, "No one asked a question about what it would take for an earthquake of magnitude 8 to occur.
