Ömer Takdemir, who took to the streets to oppose FETO's coup attempt on July 15, 2016 in Kahramankazan, was martyred as a result of the fire opened by the coup plotters from a helicopter. Ömer Takdemir's mother, Ayfer Takdemir, spoke to DHA on the 10th anniversary of the coup attempt. Ayfer Takdemir, a mother of three children who lost her husband to cancer a year ago, said that her son Ömer Takdemir was at his friend's wedding during the coup attempt. Takdemir said, "Ömer came home in a hurry at night. He said, 'Mom, there is a coup, turn on the TV'. We watched the footage from Ankara. He sat with us for a while, but could not sit still. He said, 'I will go to the municipality'. His father did not want him to go. He waited in front of the door for a while. Then, when he got permission, he ran out."
Stating that his son and his friends first gathered in front of Kahramankazan Municipality, and then they headed towards Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. with the citizens, Takdemir said, "Helicopters opened fire. Everyone was told to lie down on the ground. My son was shot in the back when he got up. He said to his friend, 'I was shot'. He lay down on the ground and his friend could not lift him up from the ground. He was then taken to the hospital by ambulance. We went to the hospital, but we could not find him for a long time. It turned out that the doctors were trying to save Ömer at that time. Then he went to the morgue." "It was said that one of the two young people taken down was Ömer. At that moment, we learned that we lost our son," he said.
Stating that his son is a young man devoted to his homeland and nation, Takdemir stated that he was preparing to join the military and said, "He would go to the military after 15 days. Everything was clear. He wanted to be a commando. He would say, 'Send me to the East, let me fight against terrorists, and I will be a martyr there too'. He really wanted to be a martyr. Our pain is great. Those who live know it. First, I experienced the pain of my son, and last year I lost my wife. Days pass, but the pain does not go away. Still, I am proud of my son." "He loved his country very much. Our President always stood behind us and came to our home. God bless us. It would have been very difficult to survive without that support."
'IF IT HAPPENED TODAY, I WOULD LET HIM GO AGAIN'
Saying that he would allow his son to go out on the streets again if the same conditions were experienced today, Takdemir said, "My son said, 'The homeland and the nation are being lost. How will we stay here if I don't leave, if you don't leave?' If it were today, I would let him go again. Because this homeland belongs to all of us. Our youth should not forget this homeland, the flag and the call to prayer. We will not be gone one day, but let our children and grandchildren protect this country. Let them not forget our martyrs. May God never come to this nation again." "It should not be a night like July," he said.
