The traces left behind by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) assassination team, which came to the hotel where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stayed in Marmaris 10 years ago, are preserved untouched, even the dust, in order to convey the testimony of the night of horror to future generations.
The destruction in the hotel where President Erdoğan stayed during the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, and where the FETO assassination team attacked immediately after his departure, is not repaired in line with the decision taken by the hotel management, in order to reveal what the coup plotters went through.
Two family rooms, which contained traces of the attack and were never opened for accommodation after that night, were viewed by the Anadolu Agency team.
The rooms look the same as on the night of July 15
The hotel management protected the rooms containing the traces of the treacherous attack with iron railings so that July 15 would not be forgotten. The sections where no cleaning or repair activities were carried out clearly reflect the horror experienced on the night of the coup attempt.
In the room where President Erdoğan stayed, in the building where he held a meeting and where the police guards were located that night, and in the rooms where the security forces stayed, bullet-ridden door locks, shattered belongings, broken mirrors, walls and furniture with bullet holes are noteworthy. The broken windows in one of the rooms where the attack was most severe appear to have been camouflaged by covering the exterior with plasterboard.
In the hotel room where the conflict took place, the handcuffs belonging to a security police officer who resisted the coup plotters are lying on the bed with traces of blood, while 18 bullet marks on a sofa reveal the extent of the attack.
In the section used as a prayer room behind the room where President Erdoğan stayed, the prayer rugs and prayer beads laid on the floor, the scattered files and papers on the meeting table, and the traces of the conflict in the sink area are preserved as they are.
In the attack on the hotel where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stayed in Marmaris during the coup attempt of FETO, protection police Mehmet Çetin and police officer Nedip Cengiz Eker, who was on duty at the Marmaris Police Department, were martyred.
The assassination team, who fled to the forest area after the attack, was caught after 17 days of search activities in the region.
In the case heard at Muğla 2nd High Criminal Court, 31 defendants, including former brigadier general Gökhan Şahin Sönmezateş, the number two defendant in the case who planned and directed the assassination attempt, former Major Şükrü Seymen, a member of the Special Forces who led the assassination team, and former petty officer sergeant major Zekeriya Kuzu, nicknamed "Pasha", known as FETO's "Çiğli base imam", were attacked 4 times each. One aggravated life sentence each, and 6 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Chief aide Ali Yazıcı, who was involved in the planning, preparation and organization of the assassination of the President, was also sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. The search for the fugitive former captain of the assassination team, Burkay Karatepe, continues.
