The images of a business selling doner kebabs for 3 thousand TL in the historical Grand Bazaar in Fatih, Istanbul, attracted great reaction on social media. After the videos spread in a short time, the Ministry of Commerce teams took action and carried out an exorbitant price inspection in the business in question.
Following the investigations, an administrative fine was imposed on the business due to the astronomical price policy and label irregularities that did not comply with market realities. Ministry officials stated that inspections against exorbitant price practices that victimize consumers, especially in touristic areas, will continue uninterruptedly.
Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Counselor of the Ministry of Commerce, said in his statement on the subject: "Our Ministry of Commerce teams took action upon the posts on social media about the sale of doner kebab for 3,000 TL in a business operating in the Grand Bazaar.
In the inspections carried out by our Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Commerce and Fatih Municipality Police teams;
It was determined that 100 grams of döner kebab was offered for sale at 600 TL in the business, and a report was prepared for 4 products within the scope of the unfair price increase. The prepared minutes and all information-documents were sent to the Unfair Price Increase Evaluation Board for evaluation. In addition, during the examinations, it was determined that 12 products did not contain cl/ml information, contrary to the Price Label Regulation, and an administrative fine was imposed on the business.
"As the Ministry of Commerce, we will continue to carry out our inspections with determination in order to protect the rights of our consumers, combat unfair price practices and ensure a fair trade order."
