Chairman of the African Union (AfB) Commission, Mahmud Ali Yusuf, said that they are in solidarity with Mali after the latest terrorist attacks.
During his visit to Mali, Yusuf met with Mali Transitional President Assimi Goita.
During the meeting, the security situation in Mali and the Sahel region, counter-terrorism activities, strengthening of peace and stability, the future of relations between Mali and the EU, and the support of African partners in the fields of security and development were discussed.
Making a statement to the press after the meeting, Yusuf stated that the visit was "clear, deep and constructive".
Emphasizing that the AfB condemns all forms of terrorism, Yusuf stated that they stand in solidarity with Mali after the latest terrorist attacks.
Appreciating the efforts of the Malian administration to strengthen stability and combat security threats, Yusuf noted that the AU Commission will continue its support to Mali in the fields of security, development, humanitarian aid and health.
Yusuf stated that the AU's support to Mali continues within the framework of respect for the sovereignty of the country and the preferences of its people, and that it also maintains its commitment to the principle of returning to constitutional order, which is included in the founding law of the Union.
Stating that this attitude will not harm the historical relations between Mali and the EU, Yusuf emphasized that cooperation in economic, social, humanitarian and development fields will continue.
Call for dialogue to the Alliance of Sahel States
Touching on regional situations, Yusuf stated that the Alliance of Sahel States "has become a political and regional reality" and called for strengthening dialogue, cooperation and good neighborly relations between the countries of the region.
Stating that the fight against terrorism is a continental problem, Yusuf said that a common African approach and solidarity is necessary against this threat.
Malian leader Goita also emphasized that he welcomed the visit of the President of the AU Commission and evaluated the visit as a sign of the AU's solidarity with the Malian government and people.
Goita reiterated his country's determination to maintain close and constructive dialogue with the EU and to carry out joint activities that will contribute to the security, stability and development of the continent.
