CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmi said the sovereignty of Arab states is a "red line" that should not be compromised.
Fahmy, who took office on July 1, held his first press conference in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, on Monday.
Pointing out that the national security of the Arab world is a responsibility that requires a common attitude, Fahmi said, "Any attack targeting the security of any Arab state is an attack on the security of the entire Arab world."
Touching on regional tensions, Fahmi stated that the crises in Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Somalia can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Fahmi reiterated that the Arab League is determined to support efforts to restore security and stability in these countries. The Secretary General emphasized that, in this context, they will focus on preserving territorial integrity, ending conflicts, increasing humanitarian aid, and the safe and dignified return of displaced persons and refugees to their countries.
Emphasizing that the Palestinian issue continues to be at the top of the Arab League's priorities, Fahmi pledged that they will continue to defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, to end the occupation and to hold accountable the perpetrators of "crimes against the civilian population."
