More than one person died in a fire that broke out in a building under renovation in the city center of Brussels, the capital of Belgium.
According to local media reports, flames broke out shortly before 08:00 local time during renovation activities in a building in Brouckere Square in the city center.
According to initial findings, the flames started on the second floor of the building. After the fire was extinguished in a short time, the flames spread to the elevator shaft. Later, the flames that broke out here were also brought under control.
While the Brussels Labor Inspection Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the dead bodies of more than one person were found in one of the elevators in the building, it stated that the exact number of those who lost their lives has not yet been determined.
Authorities also announced that 6 people were missing and search activities were continuing. It is considered that the missing persons may be found in another elevator that the fire brigade has not yet accessed.
Brecht Speybrouck, spokesman for the Brussels Labor Inspection Prosecutor's Office, stated that the fire brigade was able to access one of the elevators through a small opening and that there were more than one person inside, and that it was not yet known whether all the missing people were there.
