A 77-year-old Alzheimer's patient in Erzurum, who fell victim to phone scammers, was saved from being defrauded thanks to the vigilance of bank staff and the police, just as he was about to send 200,000 liras from his bank account to the suspects. The elderly man's prolonged refusal to accept that he was being scammed, despite warnings from the teams, added a tragicomic dimension to the incident, as everyone struggled to convince him.
Scammers, whose numbers have rapidly increased in recent years and who continue to ensnare citizens despite all warnings from security forces, this time attempted to trap 77-year-old Alzheimer's patient Mustafa Kaba in Erzurum. Mustafa Kaba, believing the scammers who contacted him by phone were relatives and trusting their lies, rushed to a bank branch. Bank staff warned the elderly man, who wanted to send 200,000 liras to an account number dictated to him over the phone, suspecting a scam. However, despite all insistence, the man stated he was sending the money to a relative. Upon notification, police teams arrived at the bank branch and determined that the incident was a scam. Despite this, the elderly man refused to accept what was happening. After long efforts, the police and bank staff finally convinced the elderly man.
While police continue their investigation into the incident, they issued a warning, particularly to elderly and vulnerable citizens, to avoid falling into such traps. - ERZURUM
