Retired computer technician Zekeriya Alagöz, who lives in Çaycuma district of Zonguldak, turns waste and scrap materials into decorative items to beautify the environment of his apartment.
Married and father of two children, 45-year-old Alagöz, who lives in the three-storey Elmas Apartment in Armağan Street in Çay Mahallesi, continued his passion for making decorative items, which he started by cutting waste cleaning material boxes and making models when he was a child, for many years.
Alagöz focused on his activities by turning the 40 square meter basement of the apartment into a zero waste workshop during the pandemic period, in order to reuse the waste and scrap materials he obtained from various places and relatives and to beautify the environment of the apartment.
Here, Alagöz produced approximately 70 pieces of decorative items such as a cactus, a street lamp and a pencil-shaped door from 70-meter wastewater pipes, a human figure from a vacuum cleaner, a water well from old tires and water pipes, a tank from an air conditioner outdoor unit, a helicopter from a hood, a palm tree from an old tire, a fan and a bird figure from a light bulb.
At the same time, the activities of Alagöz, who installed LEDs on the items he placed in the garden of the apartment building known as "Zero Waste Apartment" and illuminated it with solar energy, attract the attention of those who see it.
Alagöz told the AA correspondent that he has been making various activities with old materials since his childhood.
Stating that he focused on his activities after the pandemic, Alagöz explained that he tried to beautify the residential environment by obtaining the consent of the apartment residents.
He gives the waste left over from his work to scrap dealers.
Alagöz noted that he turned the basement of the apartment, which was a common area, into a workshop and worked there for a few hours every day.
Mentioning that he uses all kinds of waste and scrap, Alagöz said, "I turned a tank from an air conditioner outdoor unit, a helicopter from a hood, a house decorated with trees, a swan from a fan, a palm tree from a 70' water pipe, human-shaped figures on a bicycle, and old tires into different items." he said.
Alagöz stated that those who saw his activities liked it very much, that every day people were wondering and looking at it, they were surprised and wanted to know how he did it.
Stating that he will continue to spare his time to introduce new activities, Alagöz stated that he does not have a commercial purpose, he is just trying to make good use of his time.
Alagöz stated that there is a lot of waste material in nature and that he gives the remaining waste from his activities to scrap dealers.
Explaining that the apartment is also known as the "Zero Waste Apartment", Alagöz said, "I turn waste materials into decorative products. I both beautify the front of the apartment and contribute to nature." he said.
