İSMET KARAKAŞ/ ABDULLAH SARICA - All 289 cases filed regarding the coup attempt of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) on July 15, 2016 were decided by the first instance courts.
According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent, on July 15, while the coup attempt was continuing, investigations were initiated by the chief public prosecutor's office and detention orders were issued for the coup plotters.
The Turkish judiciary, which took action before the coup attempt was suppressed, initiated judicial proceedings against the coup plotters, using the authority granted to them by law.
After the investigations were completed, 289 lawsuits were filed against the defendants, including FETO's civilian imams and members of the so-called "Peace at Home Council", who planned and organized the coup attempt.
All cases were decided by local courts. 4 thousand 891 of the defendants were sentenced.
While 1,634 of the defendants were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, 1,366 to life imprisonment, 1,891 defendants were given limited prison sentences.
While the courts acquitted 2,870 defendants, they ruled that "there was no need for punishment" for 964 defendants.
The decisions made by the first instance courts came to the Supreme Court upon appeal. The Supreme Court, which approved 241 cases, continues its appeal review in other files.
Aggravated life sentences for 85 former generals and admirals
Of the 1634 defendants who were tried and sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for attempting a coup, 85 were recorded as generals and admirals, 1116 as officers, 6 as police officers, 32 as civilians and 395 as soldiers of various ranks.
Of the 1,366 defendants sentenced to life imprisonment on the same charge, 24 were generals and admirals, 536 were officers, 9 were police officers, 2 were civilians, and 795 were soldiers with the rank of petty officer and specialist sergeant.
Of the 1,891 people who were tried in coup cases and sentenced to term imprisonment for "being a member of an armed terrorist organization" and "aiding the violation of the constitutional order", 26 were generals and admirals, 776 were officers, 323 were petty officers, 156 were police officers, 31 were civilians, and 579 were military personnel of other ranks.
Of the more than 720 thousand people treated, 373 thousand received KYOK
Following FETO's coup attempt, 720 thousand 580 people were prosecuted across the country on the charge of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization".
The investigation continues against 54 thousand 27 of those who have been processed, and the trial continues against 29 thousand 909 of them.
In the completed investigations and trials, judicial authorities made decisions about 636 thousand 744 people. Among these people, 127 thousand 102 people were convicted, 124 thousand 861 people were acquitted, and 11 thousand 107 people were decided to "defer the announcement of the verdict". Judicial authorities ruled that there was no need for prosecution (KYOK) for 373 thousand 642 people, and other decisions were made for 32 people.
