There is an abundance of cherries this season in the Sultandağı district of Afyonkarahisar, one of Türkiye's important cherry production centers for export, following the agricultural frost disaster last year.
Mustafa Akpınar, a producer in Yeşilçiftlik town of Sultandağı, stated that they had a very difficult period last year due to adverse weather conditions and agricultural frost.
Stating that he grows sour cherries, apricots, plums, almonds and walnuts in his gardens as well as cherries, Akpınar said that they could not get even a single product from the trees last year.
Stating that the weather conditions were suitable for agricultural production this year, Akpınar said that while last year they could not even find cherries to eat, this year the trees bore fruit like bunches of grapes and there was a great abundance in the gardens.
Emphasizing that the excessive abundance of fruit affects the quality of cherries and that market prices are far below expectations, Akpınar stated that current prices are insufficient to meet workers' daily wages.
Stating that cherries are sold below their value, Akpınar expressed his hope that the product purchased from them cheaply will reach the consumer at an affordable price. - BURSA
