The license plate system consisting of three letters and three numbers, which started to be implemented in Istanbul in 2018, has reached the point of extinction due to high demand. Currently, the letter groups S, U, V, Y and Z remain for private vehicles. Group T cannot be used because it is reserved for commercial taxis.
As a solution, re-circulation of canceled license plates or increasing the number group to four digits is being considered. In this case, the 34 XXX 0001 format can be used again. Plate change transactions can be requested at the notary sale. The license plate printing fee for 2026 was determined as 850 lira.
