Kanpur: Amid concerns over the rollout of E20 across the country, IIT Kanpur researchers have stated that no significant drop in fuel efficiency has been found in their operations and there is no evidence that E20 harms engines. The Ministry of Petroleum announced last week that E20 could reduce fuel consumption by up to 5 percent in some vehicles, but its benefits outweighed it.
Project Scientist Dhruv Raj Karana said the drop in fuel efficiency was less than 5 percent and this drop could be due to factors other than fuel. Finding the claims on social media that E20 damages vehicles as scientifically unfounded, Karana advised drivers to trust official guidelines. IIT Kanpur's Engine Research Laboratory has conducted extensive tests on ethanol blends such as E20 and E85 and has detected no engine damage or corrosion.
