VIENNA, July 16 (Xinhua) -- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi condemned the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack that killed the chief engineer of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, calling it "unacceptable".
According to the statement made by the IAEA on the social media platform X, Russian officials stated that the chief engineer of the plant lost his life in a UAV attack near the power plant on Wednesday. Grossi emphasized that the incident in question constituted an unacceptable attack on the power plant and its management and seriously threatened nuclear security.
"We call for an immediate end to all attacks on nuclear facilities and their personnel," Grossi said.
The IAEA had recently expressed its concerns about the UAV attacks on Enerhodar, where most of the Zaporizhia personnel stayed. According to the power plant management, some employees and subcontractor personnel were among those who lost their lives in the attacks on July 12. It was stated that there were other attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, one of the largest nuclear facilities in Europe, has repeatedly faced nuclear security risks since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis.
