It was reported that the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) revealed VAT fraud worth 46.9 million euros in Greece.
According to the statement made by the European Public Prosecutor's Office, searches and operations were carried out last week at many points in the Attiki Region and Kastoria province, which includes the capital of Greece, Athens, within the scope of an investigation carried out on suspicion of VAT fraud.
As a result of the investigation launched about a year ago into VAT fraud involving small electronic device trading and money laundering, a network of shell companies dealing in small electronic device trading was detected in Bulgaria, Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC), Czech Republic and Greece.
With the data obtained, it was determined that during the 2021-2025 period, the companies in question engaged in illegal actions such as not paying VAT or receiving a refund of unpaid VAT while trading electronic goods within EU member states.
As a result of the investigation, it was revealed that this corruption caused a loss of 46.9 million euros in the EU and Greek budget. In addition, the authorities conducting the investigation stated that 25.2 million euros of VAT was either not paid at all or was declared incorrectly.
