UNSC extended the decision regarding the reporting of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea for another 6 months - Last Minute

UNITED United Nations Security Council (UNSC) decided to extend relevant reporting for another 6 months, including the decision for the Houthis in Yemen to immediately stop all attacks against commercial ships in the Red Sea.

The draft resolution prepared by the USA and Greece was put to vote at the UNSC, which convened under the name "International Peace and Security".

While 13 members said "yes" in the vote for the bill requesting the reporting to be extended for another 6 months regarding the UNSC's resolution number 2722, which demanded that the Houthi militias in Yemen immediately stop all attacks against commercial ships in the Red Sea, which was adopted on January 10, 2024, Russia and China abstained.

Resolution 2826 (2026), adopted by the UNSC today, reminds us of all UNSC resolutions taken on Yemen and the Red Sea and extends the reporting request, especially for resolution 2722 (2024), until January 15, 2027.

USA and China discussed each other at the council

Speaking after the decision was adopted, US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz accused the Houthis of being "supporters" of Iran and said that freedom of navigation in the seas was essential for international peace and prosperity.

Waltz stated that, according to UN reports, China-based individuals or organizations provided "dual-use" components and satellite images to Iran and the Houthis, and called on member states to act in accordance with UN recommendations.

Speaking thereupon, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, argued that the United States was "indisputably responsible" for the current situation in Yemen and the Red Sea, and called on the United States to first review its own actions.

Lei said, "The United States should make constructive efforts for lasting peace in Yemen and the Red Sea, instead of attacking other countries and shifting the blame to others." he said.

Emphasizing that the Yemen and Red Sea issue is not independent of the general tension in the Middle East, Lei said, "The Palestine issue continues to be at the center of this. The ceasefire agreement in Gaza has not yet brought real peace." he said.
