KINSHASA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has exceeded 2,100, and that the outbreak is the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated at a press conference in Geneva on Thursday that ongoing armed conflicts in the outbreak region, security issues, and public resistance to medical intervention have made access to affected areas difficult and limited the effectiveness of response operations.
Despite significant gains made in surveillance, treatment, and research, the virus's transmission rate continues to outpace response efforts, Ghebreyesus warned.
