Istanbul University (IU) Senate visited the July 15 Martyrs' Monument to commemorate those who were martyred in the coup attempt of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) on July 15, 2016.
Senate members prayed for the martyrs of July 15 during their visit on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
The delegation then visited the Memory 15 July Museum, where documents, photographs, videos, personal belongings and various materials related to the events of that night were exhibited.
IU Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. In his statement after the visit, Yahya Güldiken said that July 15 was a historical night in which the Turkish nation's will for independence, commitment to democracy and common homeland awareness were strongly manifested.
Güldiken stated that that night, the nation stood by its will, state, flag, call to prayer and future, and showed a great stance against the treacherous coup attempt targeting Türkiye's independence and future march. "On this occasion, we commemorate our martyrs of July 15 with mercy and express our gratitude to our veterans. Their sacrifices will always live in the memory of this country and will continue to be a strong source of our unity, courage and awareness of responsibility." he said.
Güldiken pointed out that July 15 showed them something clearly and said, "The power of a nation lies in its ability to maintain its common will against weapons, tyranny and dark plans. The feeling of belonging to the principle, country and family is the strongest basis that keeps the society alive in such times. When this belonging gains strength with the idea of unity, nations build their future more solidly." he said.
Pointing out that universities have a great responsibility in explaining July 15, Güldiken said:
"University is an institution that stands by truth, reason, science, the idea of law, social responsibility and national will. Raising our youth with knowledge, morality, critical thinking, democracy culture and patriotic responsibility is one of our most fundamental duties towards the future. As Istanbul University, we center the principles of open door, open science, measurable impact and public benefit with our 'Perspective 2053' approach. With this understanding, we strengthen the unity of our nation, nourish our democracy, broaden the horizons of our youth. "We will continue to produce activities that expand and add value to the future of our country."
